Eight days is the sensible minimum for São Tomé island, and ten or eleven to add Príncipe. We compare 5, 8, 11 and 14-day itineraries and what each one covers.
How many days in Sao Tome do you need? Eight days is the sensible minimum to see São Tomé island without rushing, and ten or eleven if you want to add Príncipe. With less than a week, an 11–13 hour journey from the UK with a connection in Lisbon simply does not pay off.
Some travel blogs say three or four days are enough to "tick off" the highlights. On the ground, that is not our experience. The reason is not that the country is big (the main island is only about 50 km from north to south) but that the southern roads are slow, distances are deceptive and everything here moves at the local leve leve pace, "easy, easy". Let us go step by step.

Why distances on São Tomé are deceptive
On the map, driving from the capital to the southern tip looks like 65 km. In practice it is a good three hours: broken tarmac, deep potholes, single-lane bridges and unsigned stretches. And you simply do not drive at night; the UK Foreign Office also warns that many roads are in poor condition and unlit outside the capital.
On top of that, almost everything worth seeing is spread out: coffee in the centre and at altitude, cocoa in the north, the beaches and Pico Cão Grande in the south, the city in the north-east. There is no way to see it all from a single base without spending your trip in the car.
5 days: only if there is no alternative
With five full days you only have time for the north and the centre, staying in or near the capital:
- São Tomé city and its market
- The Cocoa Route: a cooperative, Roça Agostinho Neto, Lagoa Azul and Praia dos Tamarindos
- The Coffee Route: Trindade, Roça Monte Café and the Cascata Milagrosa
- A day on a nearby beach
What you miss: the whole south. That means Pico Cão Grande, the paradise beaches, Ilhéu das Rolas and the Equator monument; precisely the images most people come for.
Our honest opinion: if you only have five days, choose another destination and save São Tomé for when you have a long week.
How many days in Sao Tome for a first trip: 8 days, the right balance
This is the length we recommend for a first trip, and the length of our circuit. It lets you cover the whole island with two or three bases and no wasted transit days (we explain the bases in where to stay in São Tomé):
- Day 1: arrival, transfer and a night in an inland roça
- Day 2: Coffee Route: Trindade, Roça Monte Café, the Almada Negreiros Museum and the Cascata Milagrosa
- Day 3: down to the south: the washerwomen of the Abade river, Roça Água-Izé, Boca do Inferno and the Pico Cão Grande viewpoint
- Day 4: Ilhéu das Rolas and the Equator monument, one foot in each hemisphere
- Day 5: free beach day in the south
- Day 6: back north via the Cauê river viewpoint, the Ribeira Peixe waterfall and a gourmet lunch at a roça
- Day 7: Cocoa Route, the Baobab Route, Lagoa Azul and Roça Agostinho Neto
- Day 8: São Tomé city and departure
Eight days cover 90% of what makes this country unique. A detailed day-by-day version is in our São Tomé and Príncipe itinerary.
10–11 days: adding Príncipe
Príncipe is smaller, greener and even less visited: a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, with Pico Papagaio dominating the landscape and beaches such as Banana Beach and Praia Grande practically empty.
To include it you need to allow for:
- Two 35-minute inter-island flights (€180–260 return)
- A real safety margin: the small planes are delayed and cancelled fairly often
- At least three nights there; with two, the trip turns into airports
That is why the jump is not from 8 to 9 days, but from 8 to 10 or 11. Never plan your flight back to Europe on the same day you return from Príncipe. If you would rather not do the maths yourself, our 11-day trip across both islands already has the margins built in, with TAP flights from Lisbon included, from €3,100.

14 days: the unhurried trip
With two weeks you can afford what every other itinerary sacrifices:
- Trekking to Pico de São Tomé (2,024 m) or hiking in Obô Natural Park
- Diving and snorkelling at a relaxed pace, including some dives on Príncipe
- Several beach days with no agenda
- Whale watching or turtle nesting, depending on the season
- Real time in the roças, talking instead of photographing
- A boat trip to Ilhéu Bom Bom or to beaches you cannot reach by road
How many days depending on what you want
- Beach and switching off: 8 days are enough; base yourself in the south.
- Nature, birds and endemic species: 11–14 days, including Príncipe and Obô.
- History, roças and cocoa: 8 well-organised days.
- Diving: at least 10 days, to string several dives together without flying the next day.
- Honeymoon: 10–11 days, with nights in the south and on Príncipe.
- Whales (July–October) or turtles (September–April): add 1–2 days of margin, because they depend on the sea and the weather. Check the best time to visit São Tomé.
Common mistakes when counting the days
- Counting arrival and departure days as full days. The Lisbon flight times eat up a good part of both.
- Planning as if the roads were British. A transfer to the south takes half a day.
- Squeezing Príncipe in. Two nights there give you nothing and add the risk of missing your international flight.
- Leaving no free day. It rains hard and suddenly here, and some excursions depend on the sea.
- Forgetting there are no daily flights to Europe. The plane sets the dates, not you.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are recommended for São Tomé and Príncipe?
Eight days for São Tomé island, and ten or eleven if you also want to include Príncipe.
Can you see São Tomé in 4 or 5 days?
Only partly: enough for the north and the centre, leaving out the south, Pico Cão Grande and Ilhéu das Rolas. Not worth it for such a long journey from the UK.
Is a week in São Tomé enough?
Seven nights (eight days) is enough for the main island at a comfortable pace, as long as you split your nights between the centre, the south and the capital.
How many days do you need on Príncipe?
Three nights minimum, plus the two inter-island flights. With less, the trip becomes transit.
How much does an 8-day trip cost?
Around €2,200–2,600 per person (about £1,870–2,210) with flights and a guided circuit. The full breakdown is in how much a trip to São Tomé costs.
Is it better to stay in one hotel or move around?
Move around. With one base you would spend the trip in the car. The usual pattern is to sleep inland, in the south and in the capital.
How long does it take to drive the island from north to south?
About three hours by 4x4 to the southern tip, depending on the road and the rain.
Is it worth going back?
Many people do. The first trip usually covers São Tomé island; the second focuses on Príncipe, diving or trekking.
Eight days, all organised
Our 8-day São Tomé guided circuit is designed on exactly this logic: three bases (Roça Santa Luzia, Praia Inhame Ecolodge and Hotel Omali), zero wasted days and the three classic routes (coffee, cocoa and the southern beaches) plus Ilhéu das Rolas. It is a private trip from €1,250 per person, flights not included, with an English-speaking local guide, a 4x4 with driver, five guided excursions and half board with 17 meals.
