A local guide to Pico Cão Grande in São Tomé: where it is, the best viewpoints, the guided hike to the base, whether you can climb it and when to go.
What is Pico Cão Grande? Pico Cão Grande is a 663-metre volcanic plug that shoots straight up out of the rainforest in the south of São Tomé island, inside Obô Natural Park. You see it from the southern road just past São João dos Angolares and from several viewpoints that local guides know. You can't climb it without technical rock climbing, but you can hike close to its base with a guide. The best light is early in the morning, in the dry season from June to September.
We are a local agency based in São Tomé and we pass Cão Grande several times a month with our travellers. This guide is what we've learned: where to stop, what time to go, how long the trail takes and how to fit it into a trip to the south.

Where is Pico Cão Grande?
Pico Cão Grande is in the south of São Tomé island, inland near the village of Ribeira Peixe, about two hours' drive from São Tomé city along the east coast road. It sits inside Obô Natural Park, which protects roughly a third of the island. Geologically it is a volcanic plug: magma that hardened inside an ancient volcano and was left standing when erosion stripped away the softer rock. Its smaller neighbour is Pico Cão Pequeno.

Best places to see Pico Cão Grande
- From the southern road: past São João dos Angolares the peak appears between the palm plantations and the forest, often with cloud on top.
- Palm plantation viewpoints: between Ribeira Peixe and the peak there are stopping points with the classic view over the palms. Our guides pick the stop according to the light.
- At the base: with a guide, a forest trail takes you close to the tower, where you finally grasp its size.

The hike to the base
The trail to the base is always done with a local guide. It isn't marked, it crosses dense forest and it gets slippery in the rainy season. Allow one to two hours return, with short but steep sections. Wear shoes with good grip and bring water, insect repellent and a light rain layer. You don't need mountain experience, but you should be used to walking.
Can you climb Pico Cão Grande?
Only as a technical climb: the walls are vertical and smooth, and the summit has been reached by a handful of climbing expeditions with their own gear. For travellers, the experience is seeing the peak, photographing it and walking in the forest around it. If you want a real summit, Pico de São Tomé, the country's highest point at 2,024 metres, is a two-day guided trek with no climbing skills needed.

When to visit and what time
- Season: the gravana dry season, June to September, has less rain and clearer views. December to February also has good windows.
- Time of day: early morning. From late morning clouds tend to cling to the top.
- Patience: if it's hidden, wait a few minutes. Clouds in the south move fast.
Pico Cão Grande on a trip to southern São Tomé
The south needs at least one night away from the capital. The day we plan for our travellers: early start, Roça Água Izé and Boca do Inferno on the way, lunch at São João dos Angolares, a stop at Cão Grande in the best afternoon light and a night in the south. The next morning, a boat to Ilhéu das Rolas and the Equator monument.
